The Crypto Brief, Nov. 6: A Record Quarter, A Resignation

Strategy's finance chief quit days after its best quarter ever, and nine other stories test whether crypto's institutions are getting steadier or just bigger.

“A finance chief just quit the biggest bitcoin bet on Wall Street, four days after its best quarter on record. Does a departure like that still mean trouble when the balance sheet looks strongest on record?”

Strategy posted the largest quarterly profit in its history on Oct. 29, 20261. The same filing announced that Andrew Kang, its chief financial officer, was leaving. That pairing sets the tone for the day. Ten stories test whether crypto's biggest companies are getting steadier, or just bigger. A compliance chief moved from one exchange to its rival. Polymarket's board fired its marketing chief. He was also its chief executive's oldest friend. Hackers borrowed against stolen money on a lending protocol. That protocol answered with new rules. The ten stories run from Oct. 21 to Nov. 6, 2026. This list opens with the exit that broke beside a record. The list closes with the ETFs that felt the week's broader selloff.

A Resignation Lands Beside a Record

Strategy's 8-K told two stories in one filing1. Bitcoin holdings rose 26 percent this year. Quarterly profit hit $21 billion, the largest in company history2. Two: Kang was stepping down after four and a half years as chief financial officer, effective Nov. 53. Strategy's filing states the move came for personal reasons and “not the result of any disagreement between Mr. Kang and the Company on any matter”. Reza Virasteh takes the CFO title on Jan. 1, 2027. Phong Le, Strategy's president and chief executive, runs the finance seat until then. Le explained why he still trusts the balance sheet, on the earnings call. “Our downside is really now well-protected, where Bitcoin could fall 78% to $18,000,” Le said6.

A Red Flag, or Just a Filing

Matthew Kratter reads the same exit differently. The Bitcoin University founder posted his take on X the day the news broke. “A sudden departure like that is almost always a huge red flag for any company. Think Enron, WorldCom, Lehman Brothers, etc,” Kratter wrote4. Strategy insiders had sold stock before the exit too. Le sold $12.5 million in shares this year. Director Jarrod Patten sold $11.4 million. Kang himself sold $5.5 million, his last sale in June5. Each of those sales clears securities law and disclosure rules on its own. Together, they form the fact Kratter's warning rests on. Strategy's filing skips over that fact entirely.

    Crypto.com Replaces Its Compliance Chief

Mohammed Mortajine becomes Crypto.com's new chief compliance officer, named to the role on Oct. 22, 20267. He arrives from banking and payments roles at Western Union, ACI Worldwide and Paysafe. His compliance work spans more than 200 countries. Chief executive Kris Marszalek framed the hire as a rebuild. “We are incredibly excited to welcome Mohammed to build the next generation of global financial compliance operations,” Marszalek said.

Mortajine answered in kind. “I'm excited to join at this moment and build upon this foundation transforming the function into a world-class compliance operation,” he said. He replaces Antonio Alvarez. Alvarez left Crypto.com in August to become deputy to Binance's own chief compliance officer, Noah Perlman8.

Polymarket Cuts Its Marketing Chief, and a Friendship

Shayne Coplan built Polymarket with Matthew Modabber at his side since 20249. The two had been close friends since high school. Polymarket's board fired Modabber anyway. An internal inquiry found his team built a fake webpage, showing users winning trades the team invented. Coplan first pushed back against his own legal team over the firing. He came around once the board tied Modabber's exit to the company's push toward a possible IPO. A listing this size needs distance from the executive a staged-trading inquiry points to. That holds, whatever the two of them built together first.

    Aave Writes New Borrowing Rules

A wallet tied to Binance's record hack deposited $60 million in stolen USDT on Aave on Oct. 29, 202610. It borrowed 19,762 WETH against that collateral, worth $44.6 million, inside three minutes11. Aave's guardians froze the exposed markets 41 minutes later. The freeze held 175 reserves across 16 networks on Aave's V3. Aave's V4 held 117 more reserves frozen across four networks. Every market stayed open for withdrawals and repayments the whole time. LlamaRisk, the protocol's risk manager, now wants borrowing capped by time as well as by collateral. A future thief would then need far longer than three minutes to move tens of millions again. Guardians can freeze a market fast. A speed limit would stop the thief before guardians ever need to act.

The $15 Transaction That Moved $2.5 Billion

Bloomberg reported Nov. 6, 2026, that a single transaction carried 40 percent of everything stolen from Binance on Oct. 2912. The attackers paid roughly $15 in network fees for it13. Their trick used EIP-7702, an Ethereum feature that lets a wallet hand standing permission to outside code. That replaces approving each transfer alone. The attackers submitted a signed instruction from Binance's own hot wallet, granting that permission. Three and a half minutes later, their code moved $2.5 billion in one transfer. Dan Caspi, Hypernative's co-founder and chief technology officer, framed the broader fight in six words. "In an attack, the defender wants to slow down the attacker," Caspi said. Fifteen dollars bought the attacker all the speed he needed.

    Nigeria Writes Stablecoins Into Law

Nigeria's central bank issued licensing rules for stablecoin issuers on Nov. 6, 202614. The rules split issuers into two classes. One covers tokens tied to the naira. The other covers tokens tied to foreign currencies, and needs a company incorporated in Nigeria, holding its own issuer license. Algorithmic stablecoins lean on market forces, apart from reserve assets, to hold their value. Nigeria bans them outright. Existing operators get 180 days to apply. Every issuer answers to the same customer checks, sanctions screening and transaction monitoring that banks already run.

Ripple Pushes the SEC on Its Own Rule

Ripple's chief legal officer put a dollar figure on fighting the SEC case by case. Stuart Alderoty filed a comment letter backing the agency's proposed Regulation Crypto Assets on Oct. 20, 202615. He wants a final rule to replace the next lawsuit. “Years of 'case by case, coin by coin' enforcement has pushed innovation offshore,” Alderoty wrote. He pointed to the $150 million his own company spent defending itself in court. Ripple's letter asks the SEC to judge a token's status by what its issuer promised buyers. That test stands apart from how decentralized its network becomes afterward. A rule written that plainly would bind the SEC in a way a settlement always leaves open.

Solana Sets a Fork Deadline for Its Own Validators

Anza told Solana's validators to install Agave 4.4.1 by 13:30 UTC on Nov. 6, 202616. Miss it, and a validator forks off the network at epoch 1079. That cuts it away from the chain everyone else keeps running. The update touches core software every validator runs. A skipped install costs that validator its place on the chain. This deadline is blunt by design, the network's way of forcing an upgrade through before a quieter bug finds the stragglers first.

Bitcoin ETFs Lose $530 Million as the Week's Selloff Spreads

US spot bitcoin and ether funds shed $530 million on Nov. 5, 2026, with zero bitcoin fund posting a gain that day17. Fidelity's FBTC lost $199.87 million, the week's largest single outflow. BlackRock's IBIT lost $105 million, its fifth straight day of withdrawals. Grayscale's GBTC lost $49.9 million. Franklin Templeton's EZBC lost $32.92 million, and VanEck's HODL lost $23.64 million.

November's bitcoin fund withdrawals already total $869.8 million, five days into the month. The same funds that carried bitcoin into pension plans and brokerage accounts now carry its worst weeks there too.

      What to watch

Watch whether Virasteh's January start changes how Strategy talks about its own downside. Le is making that case alone until then. Aave's governance forum will show whether LlamaRisk's time-based limit becomes a real proposal or stays a suggestion. Nigeria's 180-day licensing window gives every stablecoin issuer serving its market a deadline worth tracking. The clearest test sits with the SEC itself. Its next move on Regulation Crypto Assets is the one to watch. That move will show whether Alderoty's $150 million legal bill bought Ripple the rule he asked for.

Both sides, in their own words

Does a departure like that still mean trouble when the balance sheet looks strongest on record?
