“Thesis, a venture studio building products on Bitcoin, hired Katherine Snow away from crypto data platform Messari to run its legal team on October 3, 2024. Does hiring from inside crypto's own data infrastructure signal a studio bracing for regulators rather than rivals?”

Thesis named Katherine Snow general counsel in a release dated October 3, 20241. The hire pulled her away from crypto data platform Messari, where she had spearheaded global policy and legal strategy, the release said. Snow would lead Thesis's legal team as the venture studio continued building products on Bitcoin. Compliance Week reported the hire a week later, on October 10, 20242.

      The move

Thesis's own release tied the hire to the studio's regulatory exposure across jurisdictions. Snow would "guide the company through an ever-evolving regulatory landscape," the release said1. Her experience would be “instrumental as Thesis* continues to drive the adoption of decentralized technologies while ensuring compliance across key jurisdictions,” the release said. Matt Luongo, chief executive of Thesis, named the value he saw in her background. “We're thrilled to have Katherine join our leadership team. Her knowledge of both the legal and regulatory environment in fintech and blockchain is invaluable as we continue to expand our ecosystem,” Luongo said. Snow answered with her own read of the moment. “I'm excited to join Thesis* at such a pivotal time for both the company and the blockchain industry. Thesis* is pushing the boundaries of what's possible in decentralized finance and blockchain adoption, and I look forward to helping the team navigate regulatory challenges,” Snow said.

      Before and after at Thesis

Snow spent just under three years at Messari as chief legal officer, the Global Legal Post reported3. Before that she was associate general counsel at crypto trading platform Binance.US. Her legal career started at Sherman & Howard. From there she moved to two years at Cooley, in the firm's blockchain technology group, the Global Legal Post reported. At Thesis, Snow joined a studio backed by Andreessen Horowitz, Fenbush Capital and Polychain Capital, the Global Legal Post reported. Its brand portfolio includes the Bitcoin payments platform Fold. Why move from a data platform to a venture studio with live products? Snow's own quote pointed to scale. She described navigating "regulatory challenges" across a portfolio, a wider scope than a single company1.

      What the record shows

Thesis's own announcement and Compliance Week's report both describe Snow taking on legal leadership across the studio's Bitcoin-focused brand portfolio, including Threshold Network, as of October 202412. Both sources attribute her mandate to guiding Thesis through compliance work across the multiple jurisdictions its products touch.
