Fetch.ai, SingularityNET and Ocean Protocol announced a merger on March 27, 2024. The new group, the Artificial Superintelligence Alliance, named Ben Goertzel chief executive, the three organizations said on Fetch.ai's blog1. Humayun Sheikh, Fetch.ai's founder, became chairman. Trent McConaghy and Bruce Pon of Ocean Protocol took seats on the governing council. The three projects planned to merge their tokens into one, called $ASI. Decrypt reported a combined value of $7.5 billion at signing2.

Goertzel founded SingularityNET. He coined the term "artificial general intelligence" back in 2005, Decrypt reported2. The new group held 2.631 billion tokens in all. Fetch.ai's post counted 225,000 wallet holders of the three old tokens, plus several hundred thousand more on exchanges1. Each group would keep its own staff, leaders and funds, the post said.
Why three foundations chose one chief executive
Sheikh framed the merger as a response to centralized control over artificial intelligence. “Decentralized AI facilitates direct interactions between developers and users, bypassing the traditional gatekeepers of centralized authorities,” Sheikh told Decrypt in a press release shared with the outlet2. Fetch.ai's own post pitched the Alliance as a counterweight to big tech. The Alliance aimed “to give AI researchers, companies and governments an alternative that doesn't lock them into walled gardens”1.
Decrypt reported that the token swap required majority approval from each project's community, with voting set to open April 2, 20242. The outlet's March 27 report named the token the Superintelligence Collective and said it could rank near the top 20 cryptocurrencies, trading at $2.82 if approved.
What came next
In January 2026, nearly two years later, Goertzel still held the chief executive title. He wrote a column for IT Brief UK on January 26, 2026, under the byline "Computer Scientist, Chief Executive Officer of Artificial Superintelligence (ASI) Alliance"3. In it, he said he had spent three decades working toward the same goal the 2024 merger announced. The byline used the Alliance's shortened name, ASI Alliance, the name the three founding projects had adopted since the merger closed.
