The move
Rothenhaeuser described his own excitement about the timing in BitMEX's announcement. “BitMEX has major expansion plans in the works, and I'm excited to have joined their growing team at this pivotal time. I see many opportunities for us to expand beyond derivatives, develop game-changing products, and offer significant value in the crypto space for retail and institutional clients alike,” he said1. Höptner welcomed him to the senior leadership team in the same post. “I'm thrilled to welcome Rupertus to our senior leadership team as we expand our services, reach new markets, and transform BitMEX from a derivatives-focused platform to a full crypto ecosystem,” Höptner said. He added that the company's mission was "to lead the digital financial revolution".
BitMEX before and after
Rothenhaeuser arrived after more than 25 years in senior equity derivatives sales and trading roles, FX News Group reported in November 20253. He had served as chief executive of Crypto Finance (Brokerage) AG for more than a year before joining BitMEX in January 20221. Earlier leadership roles took him through ABN AMRO Bank, BNP Paribas, Macquarie Group, SIX Digital Exchange and Boerse Stuttgart. BitMEX's blog said he would be based in Asia. His focus would be developing client relationships and growing the company's market share across its expanding product line. CryptoNinjas reported his duties included overseeing commercial success for BitMEX's new products2.
What came next
By November 2025, Rothenhaeuser had moved from BitMEX to AllUnity, an e-money institute, FX News Group reported on Nov. 4, 20253. The same report announced a new seat for him on the supervisory board of Sage Capital Management, a digital asset prime broker. Among his roles over 35 years, the report listed chief executive of BitMEX Switzerland, a seat on SIX Digital Exchange's executive team, and the post it calls CCO at AllUnity. Sage Capital's chief executive, Nathan Sage, explained the appointment. “His experience combines best practice from the trad-fi space with the agility of the digital space, and I am thrilled that he has chosen to join our Supervisory Board,” Sage said.
