“Oliver Stauber, a Vienna attorney who worked on Bitcoin and blockchain law, became chief legal officer of Bitpanda, a crypto exchange with more than 1 million users, on January 14, 2020. Does a lawyer who built his practice on the asset class make a different kind of general counsel than one who arrived from outside it?”

Bitpanda named Oliver Stauber its chief legal officer on January 14, 2020. The Austrian exchange said he would oversee legal matters across the company. He would also run relationships with outside counsel1. Stauber had been a licensed attorney in Vienna since 2014. He carried more than 15 years of professional experience, including more than five years at international auditing firms.

The move

Chief Executive Officer Eric Demuth tied the hire to Stauber's record in the asset class. “Oliver is a pioneer in crypto law. His strong background and experience in Tax and Capital Markets especially for digital assets, blockchain, and cryptocurrencies make him superbly qualified for this position,” Demuth said1. Stauber gave his own read on the timing. “Bitpanda is a company with an outstanding, solid reputation driving the fintech revolution and tackling change in the financial industry over the next few years. Joining the team at this stage is a strategic move to provide insights and expertise for the next stage, which is growth,” he said.

Finance Magnates reported that Stauber's appointment would help Bitpanda meet strict regulatory standards across Europe2. Stauber named the regulatory calendar ahead of him. “There are a lot of exciting projects going on in legal and compliance. Take the new AML5 regulation starting on January 10th or digitised stocks,” he said1.

Before and after the hire

Stauber came to Bitpanda from Stadler Völkel, a Vienna firm specializing in Bitcoin and blockchain law. He had also worked at Jarolim Partner and at CMS Reich-Rohrwig Hainz12. His legal background covered mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, tax law and capital markets. He focused on fintech, blockchain and cryptocurrencies. Bitpanda held a PSD2 payment service provider license when he joined. In January 2020, the exchange reported more than 1 million users and over 160 team members.

What came next

Bitpanda's chief legal officer seat had changed hands by the time the exchange reorganized its leadership in 2026. Trending Topics reported on September 2, 2026, that Katrin Joschtel had joined the executive committee to lead compliance, risk and anti-financial crime. She would report, the outlet said, to "Chief Legal Officer Fabian Reinisch"3. Bitpanda's own public record stops short of saying when Stauber's tenure ended or who held the title between him and Reinisch.
