“Bakkt said on Aug. 17, 2026, that chief financial officer Karen Alexander had left, a week after it reported second-quarter net income near $81 million, up from a net loss a year earlier. Does a finance chief leave on the heels of a turnaround, or because of what the next phase demands of the role?”

Bakkt announced Aug. 17, 2026, that Karen Alexander had transitioned out of the chief financial officer role, effective Aug. 14, 20261. Matt White, who spent more than seven years as CFO of CoreCard Corporation, succeeded her, and Alexander agreed to stay on in an advisory capacity to support the handoff.

      The transition

Bakkt's filing framed White's arrival around the company's next phase rather than around Alexander's exit. “Matt joins Bakkt as the Company enters its next phase of global growth, with an expanding focus on technology-enabled financial infrastructure, AI and disciplined capital allocation,” the release said1. Chief executive Akshay Naheta thanked his outgoing CFO directly. “I want to thank Karen for her contributions to Bakkt and for supporting the transition,” Naheta said, adding that White brings “exactly the profile we want in a CFO for the next phase of Bakkt”.

Alexander had her own account of the company's position on the way out. On Bakkt's Aug. 10, 2026, earnings call, she said the company had made "material progress" toward becoming an infrastructure provider for stablecoins and digital tokens2. “We enter the second half with a stronger platform, clear commercial momentum and substantial room to scale,” Alexander said on that call.

      Bakkt before and after Alexander

Alexander will advise Bakkt's general counsel and CFO functions through Dec. 31, 2026, at an annualized consulting rate of $400,000, Banking Dive reported from the SEC filing. The same filing makes her eligible for a cash payment tied to a specified arbitration's outcome2.

White arrives from a payments background rather than a crypto one. CoreCard's acquisition by Euronet Worldwide, completed in October 2025, happened on his watch as CFO1. “Bakkt is at an important inflection point as it scales its technology, expands globally and executes across Markets, Agent and Global,” White said. “I am excited to lead a finance organization that matches that ambition, one that is disciplined, technology-forward and deeply connected to the business”.

The numbers behind the handoff told a mixed story. Bakkt's net income reached nearly $81 million for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. That compared with a net loss of about $15 million in the second quarter of 2025, Banking Dive reported. Revenue for the quarter reached about $170 million, down 70 percent from the $568 million Bakkt reported in the second quarter of 20252.

      What to watch

White's base salary runs $300,000 a year, with 90,000 restricted stock units and 60,000 options granted on his arrival, Banking Dive reported from the SEC filing2. Whether Bakkt's stablecoin pivot produces revenue that matches its net income swing is the test White now owns. A second marker is whether Alexander's advisory role, running through Dec. 31, 2026, surfaces her name again in Bakkt's filings before it lapses.
