Ripple named Rosie Rios to its board of directors on May 4, 2021. The same day, it named Kristina Campbell chief financial officer. Rios had served as the 43rd Treasurer of the United States under President Barack Obama, from 2009 to 2016. CNBC's Ryan Browne reported that the appointments landed during a lawsuit. Five months earlier, on December 22, 2020, the Securities and Exchange Commission had filed it. That lawsuit accused Ripple, co-founder Christian Larsen and chief executive Brad Garlinghouse of raising more than $1.3 billion through an unregistered securities offering. Ripple denied the allegations, saying XRP functioned as a currency rather than an investment contract. Campbell had spent her career at financial technology firms Green Dot and PayNearMe, most recently as PayNearMe's chief financial officer.
