“Ripple named Michael Warren, a former Obama White House adviser, to its board on March 16, 2022, 15 months after the SEC sued the company over an alleged unregistered securities offering. Does hiring Washington veterans change a regulator's mind?”

Ripple appointed Michael Warren to its board of directors on March 16, 2022, the company said in a press release1. Warren had served as a senior adviser in the White House Presidential Personnel Office during President Barack Obama's first term. At the time of the appointment, he was managing director of Albright Stonebridge Group. U.Today reported on March 16, 2022, that Warren called the move a chance to help Ripple "move the needle forward" on crypto regulation2.

      The move

Ripple framed the hire around Warren's government background. “Michael possesses deep experience and an impressive track record counseling public and private sector leaders at the highest levels during critical moments of scale,” Brad Garlinghouse, Ripple's chief executive, said in the release1. Warren pointed to the timing. “I'm excited to join Ripple at such a pivotal moment in history, both for the company as well as crypto at large,” Warren said. “I have long admired the tenacity shown by Ripple and its management team, using regulatory setbacks in the U.S. as an opportunity to pioneer crypto regulation for the benefit of industry innovation and establish an equal playing field for all”. Obama appointed Warren to the board of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation in 2010. Warren chaired its Audit Committee. He also served as executive director of the National Economic Council under Clinton.

      Ripple's board before and after

Warren joined a board already built around Washington credentials. U.Today noted that Ripple had appointed former JPMorgan executive Sandie O'Connor to the board in December 2020, weeks before the SEC sued the company. The board added former U.S. Treasurer Rosie Rios in May 20212. The board also included former diplomat Anja Manuel and former Treasury counselor Craig Phillips by the time Warren joined. SBI Ripple Asia chief executive Masashi Okuyama and economics professor Susan Athey held seats too, alongside Garlinghouse and co-founder Chris Larsen. Warren held other seats too. He sat on the Commonfund board of trustees, the boards of Walker & Dunlop and MAXIMUS, and served as a trustee of Yale University1.

      What came next

Ripple kept adding directors with finance credentials after Warren joined. On May 19, 2023, it named Warren Jenson to its board. Jenson had most recently served as Nielsen's chief financial officer. Ripple's own announcement on May 19, 2023, listed Michael Warren among the sitting directors Jenson was joining3. The CryptoLately.com Desk reviewed Ripple's leadership page on Oct. 3, 2026. That page lists Larsen, Manuel, O'Connor, David Schwartz, Jenson and Okuyama as board members, and Michael Warren's name is absent4. Ripple's pages cited here leave the date and the reason for his exit unstated.
