“MicroStrategy hired Andrew Kang, a bank treasurer turned fintech CFO, to run its finances on May 3, 2022, three months before it split its CEO and chairman roles. Does a new finance chief signal a company preparing for a bigger change at the top?”

MicroStrategy named Andrew Kang its new senior executive vice president and chief financial officer on May 3, 2022. His start date was expected on or about May 91. MicroStrategy announced the hire inside its first-quarter earnings release. That release also showed a $170.1 million digital asset impairment charge for the quarter. MarketScreener's report carried the same date. Its headline named the move: “MicroStrategy Incorporated Appoints Andrew Kang as its New Senior Executive Vice President”2.

      Why MicroStrategy picked Kang

Michael Saylor, then MicroStrategy's chief executive, introduced Kang in the same release. “We are excited to welcome Andrew to our management team. Andrew has extensive finance leadership and capital markets experience, making him an excellent choice as MicroStrategy's next Chief Financial Officer,” Saylor said. “I believe he will make significant contributions to our business as we continue to execute on MicroStrategy's enterprise software and bitcoin strategies,” he added1. Kang came from Greensky, a technology company that financed point-of-sale purchases. He had served there as executive vice president and chief financial officer since September 2020. Before Greensky, he worked as corporate treasurer for Santander Holdings USA, a $150 billion bank holding company. He had also served as an executive vice president at Santander Consumer USA.

      What changed for Phong Le

The appointment moved Phong Le out of the CFO seat he had held in addition to his role as president. MarketScreener's report spelled out the handoff: “Phong Le will continue serving as MicroStrategy's Chief Financial Officer until Mr. Kang's start date, after which Mr. Le will continue as MicroStrategy's President”2. Three months later, on Aug. 2, 2022, MicroStrategy would promote Le again, this time to chief executive, as Saylor shifted to executive chairman.

      What came next

Kang still held the CFO title as of June 9, 2026, more than four years after his appointment. An Investing.com report that day detailed a sale of 1,949 shares of Class A common stock for $241,362, executed under a Rule 10b5-1 trading plan set up in 2024 to cover tax withholding on vested restricted stock units3. The filing named him “Andrew Kang, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (EVP & CFO) at Strategy Inc,” the company's renamed form, confirming he remained in the role MicroStrategy gave him in 2022.
