“MicroStrategy named Phong Le chief executive on Aug. 2, 2022, the same day it booked a $917.8 million impairment loss on the bitcoin its founder, Michael Saylor, kept buying. Does splitting the chairman and CEO roles change who answers for that number?”

MicroStrategy split its chairman and chief executive roles on Aug. 2, 2022. President Phong Le became CEO. Founder Michael Saylor moved to executive chairman1. MicroStrategy announced the change inside its second-quarter earnings release. That same document disclosed a $917.8 million impairment loss on its bitcoin holdings for the quarter. Blockworks reported the succession on Aug. 2. The outlet framed it as Saylor stepping back from day-to-day operations to spend more time on the company's bitcoin acquisition strategy2.

Why the company split the roles

Saylor explained the split in his own words, printed in the press release that announced it. “I believe that splitting the roles of Chairman and CEO will enable us to better pursue our two corporate strategies of acquiring and holding bitcoin and growing our enterprise analytics software business. As Executive Chairman I will be able to focus more on our bitcoin acquisition strategy and related bitcoin advocacy initiatives, while Phong will be empowered as CEO to manage overall corporate operations,” he said1. Saylor told analysts on the earnings call that the succession plan had been “carefully considered and planned for at the board level for many years,” Blockworks reported2. Le called the change a "business-as-usual transition" and said he intended to keep the company's existing course.

Who Le was before the promotion

Le had served as president since July 2020. He joined the company in 2015 and had already held two other senior roles there: chief financial officer and chief operating officer1. The press release credited him with leading one of the best operational and financial years in the software business's history, in 2021. It also credited him with managing that business's shift to the cloud. MicroStrategy held 129,699 bitcoins as of June 30, 2022, worth about $2 billion. Cumulative impairment losses on those bitcoins had reached near $2 billion since the company began buying2.

      What came next

Le still ran the company, renamed Strategy, as chief executive as of Sept. 18, 2026, more than four years after the succession. TradingView reported that Strategy held roughly 845,050 bitcoin on its balance sheet by early September 2026, more than 4% of bitcoin's 21 million token supply. Strategy had purchased about 175,000 bitcoin during 2026 against sales of around 7,0003. "We're not going anywhere," Le said, describing Strategy's continued bitcoin purchases.
