“A venture firm with $2.5 billion in crypto investments hired a lawyer whose prior jobs were a fintech startup and a bank-chartered custodian. Did that fintech and bank-charter background matter more than years inside a crypto fund would have?”

Katie Biber announced on June 6, 2022, that she was joining Paradigm as chief legal officer1. Bloomberg Law reported the hire the same day2. Biber had previously served as chief legal officer at the fintech startup Brex and as general counsel for Anchorage Digital, the outlet reported. Paradigm managed a $2.5 billion crypto fund at the time, the second-largest in the industry, according to Bloomberg Law.

The move

Biber wrote her own announcement on Paradigm's site. “I'm thrilled to announce that I'm joining Paradigm as Chief Legal Officer, helping Matt and Fred expand the outstanding firm they founded only four years ago,” she wrote, referring to co-founders Matt Huang and Fred Ehrsam1. She described her path into crypto in the same post. “I've been in and around crypto since 2018, when I joined Anchorage Digital, the first crypto company to receive a federal bank charter, as one of its earliest employees.”

Bloomberg Law added detail the announcement left out. The outlet reported that Biber had also served as general counsel for Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential campaign2. She sat on the boards of Anchorage Digital and the blockchain startup Protocol Labs, Bloomberg Law reported.

Paradigm before and after

Paradigm's legal and policy team was small when Biber joined it. She named three colleagues in her post. They were chief operating officer Alana Palmedo, general counsel and chief compliance officer Reena Jashnani-Slusarz, and policy director Justin Slaughter1. Biber wrote that she was “blown away at what Reena has accomplished since stepping into this dual role in 2021.” She credited Jashnani-Slusarz with standing up compliance programs for the firm.

Biber's stated ambition for the role ran past the legal brief. “Over the next few years, I look forward to working with the exciting, cacophonous web3 community to tell our story and definitively flatten the meme that our technology is just a solution in search of a problem,” she wrote1.

What came next

The team around Biber thinned fast. CFO Dive reported on September 5, 2023, that Paradigm's chief financial officer, Nathan Apsel, and its general counsel, Reena Jashnani-Slusarz, were both expected to depart that month3. The outlet tied the departures to a broader shakeup across crypto firms that followed the collapse of FTX. Biber kept her title through it. “Katie Biber, the San Francisco, California-based company's chief legal officer, will continue to lead the company's legal team, while the company begins the hunt for a new CFO over the next few months,” CFO Dive reported, citing The Block. More than a year after her hire, Paradigm still listed Biber as its top lawyer while the firm filed amicus briefs against SEC enforcement actions targeting Coinbase and Bittrex, CFO Dive reported.
