The move
Charles Cascarilla, Paxos's chief executive and co-founder, named the specific value Giancarlo would add to the board. “Chris brings unparalleled expertise and understanding of complex market dynamics to Paxos,” Cascarilla said in the company's announcement1. “He has been at the forefront of advocating for blockchain to improve the infrastructure of our financial system. His insights will support us as we expand our position as a leader in regulated digital asset market structure and stablecoin innovation,” Cascarilla said.
Giancarlo described the fit from his own side in the same release. “Paxos has established itself as the leader in bridging traditional and digital asset markets by introducing regulated solutions that are safe for institutions and consumers,” Giancarlo said1. CoinDesk reported that Giancarlo joined an existing board that already included former Senator Bill Bradley2. Paxos had been expanding its lineup of tokens, and in 2023 it had added the Solana blockchain alongside Ethereum, CoinDesk reported.
Before and after at Paxos
Giancarlo arrived at Paxos's board with a regulatory record built around bitcoin specifically. As CFTC chairman, he oversaw the commission's authorization of the first regulated bitcoin futures, on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange in December 20173. He had written a book about that oversight, "CryptoDad: The Fight for the Future of Money"1. Giancarlo also co-founded the Digital Dollar Project, a research effort on a U.S. central bank digital currency. CoinDesk noted that Paxos remained under New York Department of Financial Services oversight. That regulator had raised concerns in 2023 about the Binance USD token Paxos then issued, a relationship Paxos had since ended2.
What came next
Giancarlo still held the Paxos board seat in April 2026, nearly two years after his May 14, 2024 appointment. Coinspeaker reported on April 14, 2026, that he was leaving the law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher to focus full time on crypto advisory work3. That report listed his “non-executive director positions at Nomura Holdings, Digital Asset Holdings, and Paxos Trust Company” among his active board affiliations. Coinspeaker also traced his path through the CFTC: nominated in 2013, confirmed chairman in 2017, and departed in July 2019, the same year he joined Willkie Farr.
