“OnRe, a reinsurer that runs its capital onchain, named Ben Fortune, chief underwriting officer at The Fidelis Partnership in Bermuda, to the same job on May 12, 2026. Can underwriting discipline from a traditional reinsurer carry over to an onchain one?”

OnRe named Ben Fortune chief underwriting officer on May 12, 2026, the company announced on its own blog1. Fortune had held the equivalent role at The Fidelis Partnership in Bermuda, Reinsurance News reported on May 12, 20262.

      The move

OnRe called itself "a licensed collateralized reinsurer and onchain asset manager" in its own release1. The release said Fortune would "set and execute OnRe's underwriting and insurance strategy" while overseeing "underwriting governance, portfolio construction, pricing discipline, and risk selection" across the firm. Fortune explained what drew him to that mandate in his own words. “The (re)insurance industry has long been a source of uncorrelated returns for investors whilst providing an essential home for society's risk,” said Ben Fortune. “As the industry modernizes and integrates new technologies alongside established market infrastructure, connecting scalable onchain capital with real world risk and yield is an exciting and inevitable next step in the industry's evolution.”

Why move from a Bermuda reinsurer to a company running its capital onchain? Fortune's quote answers directly. He frames onchain capital as the next step for an industry he has worked in for nearly 20 years, a continuation rather than a departure1.

      OnRe before and after

Before OnRe, Fortune worked at The Fidelis Partnership from its foundation in 2015, and OnRe's release puts his time there at nine years1. He held several senior roles there before becoming chief underwriting officer. Earlier in his career he held analytical roles at Leadenhall Capital Partners, Aon and Lockton. That work built “a foundation in actuarial modeling and risk assessment that continues to inform his underwriting approach,” the release said. Reinsurance News reported that Fortune's start with OnRe depends on "immigration approval" before he can join the firm in Bermuda2.

Dan Roberts, OnRe's co-founder and chief executive, framed the hire as a step toward scale. “Ben brings a depth of underwriting experience that is critical as we scale,” said Dan Roberts, co-founder and CEO of OnRe. “His track record across portfolio construction and disciplined risk selection strengthens our ability to scale as a capital partner in Bermuda and deploy across a global portfolio. This appointment is a key step in further institutionalizing our underwriting function.”1 OnRe's release put its onchain platform at $170 million at the time of the announcement. OnRe described Bermuda as home to more than $500 billion in reinsurance assets.

      What to watch

Fortune's own case rests on underwriting discipline carrying over from a traditional Bermuda reinsurer to an onchain one. The clearest test is OnRe's own disclosed assets under management, which stood at $170 million in the May 12, 2026 release1, set against any later figure the company or Reinsurance News publishes. A second marker is whether OnRe's underwriting governance structure, which Fortune was hired to oversee, appears in a future audit or regulatory filing naming him by role.
